How to Stain a Deck

For those of you that are ambitious enough to want to stain your own deck, kudos goes out to you!  This is probably one of the least fun and most tedious processes in being a deck owner, hah.  I have compiled a list of some easy, simple steps to follow when staining your own deck.

To start:

This is an obvious one, but I am going to say it regardless.  Please please pretty please check the weather forecast.  You want to pick a day when the weather will be not too cold, but not too hot, and days with no chance of rain in the forecast.  Remove everything from the deck and cover any nearby landscaping work with clear plastic to protect from possible spray.  Sweep away any debris and make sure your deck is nice an clean before you stain.  You may want to stain a small area of the deck first, and let it dry just to make sure it is the color you want.

What to wear:

Please keep safety in mind when doing a job like this.  Wear rubber gloves, goggles, close toed shoes, pants and a long sleeve shirt.  This will help in minimizing possible skin irritation.

Stain:

Make sure you stir the stain (don't shake) as it may have settled over time. Apply a thin layer to your deck using a roller, use a paint brush for the corners and hard to reach areas.  Don't apply too thick!  Make sure you spread out any areas where the stain may start to pool.  Once the first THIN layer has dried, repeat the process for a second coat.

Finally:

Enjoy!!!
